Lighting Design

Many companies underestimate the importance of good lighting design. The cost of getting it wrong is likely to have a far higher cost than that of the installation and is likely to have a detrimental effect on the business as a whole. The phrase "Sick Building Syndrome" is well known within the industry and one of the recurring features of this malady is unsatisfactory lighting which often results in reduced efficiency and performance of one of the company's most valuable assets, the workforce. There have been many instances where individuals, with the help of the Health & Safety Executive, have been awarded significant damages due to stress, eyestrain, headaches etc. The clear indications are that the number of reported cases continues to rise and is so widespread that specialist law firms are prepared to proceed on a "no win, no fee" basis, confident of the outcome. The latest U.K. legislation covering offices with computer screens only sets minimum standards and in reality many offices do not even reach this level, which gives an indication of how widespread the problem really is. It is not sufficient just to throw Category 2 louvres at the problem and expect this to resolve all the regulatory issues.

When planning an installation there are three fundamental considerations, Safety, Appearance and Performance. Within these broad headings we have other disciplines to consider such as ambience, energy consumption, environmental consideration, productivity, control, statutory requirements and cost. Dependant on the installation particular emphasis will be given priority over other considerations to achieve the objectives, however with the large choice of light sources and luminaires available in the marketplace a cost effective and appealing scheme can be designed.
